:: July 10-12: NM Game Jam
NM Game Jam Challenges Video Game Developers To Make a Game in 48 Hrs.
The Rio Grande chapter of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) presents the first ever NM Game Jam, a 48 hour video game development challenge to be held the second weekend of July (July 10th - July 12th). Inspired by their participation in the Global Game Jam earlier this year, members of the Rio Grande IGDA have organized a similar event for New Mexicans to spend a wild weekend designing and creating innovative games.
A game jam follows a format much like the 48 Hour Film Festival being held the same weekend. Participants arrive on Friday evening to receive three theme words, chosen at random, roulette-wheel style, from a published list of 30 potential themes provided by game writer and chapter member Carolyn Handler Miller. Participants brainstorm ideas on possible games that incorporate two of the three chosen themes and form teams to build their games.
Once the teams have decided on their game's premise, the participants are in a mad rush to create the art, music, and code that will produce a playable version of their concept. Luke Nihlen, President of 10th Artist and project lead for the lone Albuquerque team in the Global Game Jam, gives his impression on why this type of event leads to making innovative games: "The great thing about a game jam is that the limited time forces developers to focus on accomplishing only a small feature set. Smart developers will focus on gameplay and will plan in a gameplay-centric fashion. Specifically, the question that should come up in planning is "What does this feature add to the gameplay?" This, in my opinion, is the way that any good game is made."
The creators of the NM Game Jam hope that this event accomplishes several missions, most importantly to help cultivate and strengthen the budding game development industry taking shape in the state. Jon Whetzel, Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories and Rio Grande IGDA chair member, viewed the Global Game Jam as "the best method I've seen so far in getting people even remotely interested in making games involved. Not only did I get to meet several game developers, both seasoned and new, who share the same passion, but we all contributed to putting a game together that still makes me proud." Eric Renz-Whitmore, Program Coordinator for the UNM ARTS Lab and Chairman of the Rio Grande IGDA hopes that the event shows off New Mexico's game-making talent. "There's a tremendous amount of creativity here, which we saw at the Global Game Jam," said Renz-Whitmore. "This is a great opportunity to meet, work together and have fun."
The NM Game Jam is scheduled to start on July 10th at 6:00 pm at the UNM ARTS Lab (131 Pine St., NE). The NM Game Jam concludes on Sunday July 12th at 6:00 pm followed immediately with game demonstrations and presentations. For more information of the NM Game Jam, visit their website (http://nmgamejam.org) or contact Eric Renz-Whitmore (whitmore@unm.edu or 277-2253).

About Chris Crawford
Chris Crawford earned a Master of Science degree in Physics from the University of Missouri in 1975. After teaching physics for several years, he joined Atari as a game designer in 1979. There he created a number of games: Energy Czar, an educational simulation about the energy crisis, Scram, a nuclear power plant simulation, Eastern Front (1941), a wargame, Gossip, a social interaction game, and Excalibur, an Arthurian game.
Following the collapse of Atari in 1984, Crawford took up the Macintosh. He created Balance of Power, a game about diplomacy, Patton Versus Rommel, a wargame, Trust & Betrayal, a social interaction game, Balance of the Planet, an environmental simulation game, and Patton Strikes Back, a wargame. In 1992, Crawford decided to leave game design and concentrate his energies on interactive storytelling, a field that he believed would become important. He created a major technology for interactive storytelling systems, patenting it in 1997. He is now commercializing his technology at his company website at storytron.com.
Crawford has written five published books: The Art of Computer Game Design, now recognized as a classic in the field, in 1982; Balance of Power (the book) in 1986; The Art of Interactive Design in 2002; Chris Crawford on Game Design in 2003; and Chris Crawford on Interactive Storytelling in 2004.
He created the first periodical on game design, the Journal of Computer Game Design, in 1987. He founded and served as Chairman of the Computer Game Developers' Conference, now known as the Game Developers' Conference.
Crawford has given hundreds of lectures at conferences and universities around the world, and published dozens of magazine articles and academic papers.
Crawford served as computer system designer and observer for the 1999 and 2002 NASA Leonid MAC airborne missions; he also has done some analysis of the resulting data. He lives in southern Oregon with his wife, 3 dogs, 10 cats, 5 ducks, and 3 burros.

:: June 07: Nathaniel Bartlett
solo marimba + three-dimensional, high-definition, computer-generated sound projection
"As an integral part of being dedicated to instruments of our time (the modern marimba + computer), I am also dedicated to the music of our time — making a great effort to compose, commission, perform, and record new works. In particular, I am interested in works that utilize three-dimensional, high-definition (24bit/96kHz), computer-generated sound projection. I perform with a rig that seamlessly melds my instrument with electronics, computers, and an eight-channel cube (+ subwoofer) of loudspeakers — a performance concept that I call modern marimba3. With this equipment, I am able to project and move sound anywhere in the performance space, totally immersing the audience in the music. In fact, the computer-generated sounds relate quite well to the visual arts in that concepts of objecthood and spatial structure become a part of the musical fabric." More information is here

:: May 09, 2009: The SPECTRE SERIES presents Metal Rouge & Mesa Ritual
"Metal Rouge started in Auckland, New Zealand with no aim but to open ourselves to the spontaneous psych tonalism running through the underbelly of popular music like a pure vein of lightning. We opened ourselves to the river, and now our only aim is to let that river (free)flow." Los Angeles-based Metal Rouge is a duo unit, originally formed between Andrew Scott and Helga Fassonaki.
Mesa Ritual is the duo of Raven Chacon and William Fowler Collins. If you caught the duo at the Robb Trust Composers' Symposium show here at ARTS Lab earlier this month then you'll recall low frequency electronics that shook the architecture, layered field recordings played at a whisper and towering, multicolored walls of sound.

:: March 27, George Pearl Hall Auditorium: Lecture on "Blue Flower/ Flor Azul"
"Blue Flower/ Flor Azul" is a Public Art piece designed for the George Pearl Hall building, School of Architecture and Planning at UNM. The project is commissioned by the Art in Public Places Program (AIPP) of New Mexico Arts and the UNM. It is scheduled to be installed on November 2009.
On the piece, the image of a small drop of blue ink expanding into water is optically enlarged and projected against a 900 Sq Feet custom-made LCD screen to be placed on the projection wall that is located on the west entry of the building.
This colloquium seeks to introduce the project to the University community in order to bring collaborators into the project. Due to the number of different technologies that the piece incorporates, this project offers the perfect platform for a rich collaborative experience where students from diverse disciplines will merge in a cooperative environment of open knowledge.
On this lecture the software and hardware technology that has been so far developed for the project will be introduced through an audiovisual presentation and functional prototypes. A series of "open collaboration calls" will happen along the lecture as we go over different aspects of the project. Computer Science, Electrical and Computing Engineering, Advanced Electronics, Optical Science, Digital Media Technology, Music and Fine Arts are just few of the fields related to this project. But most important of all is the craving from the student of being part of a team that will bring to life a never seen before kind of audiovisual technology.
Please, find further information of the project at http://www.federicomuelas.com/blue_flower

Ecotone Physical Theatre performs "Falling Apart - An Evening in Three Acts"
Ecotone Physical Theatre is pleased to announce two performances only, March 13-14 at the ARTS Lab Garage. The ARTS Lab Garage is located near the main campus of the University of New Mexico, and is part of UNM's High Performance Computing Center. It is a research center for investigations into the connections between the arts, technology and science.
Veering from the abstract to the comic, "Falling Apart - An Evening in Three Acts" is a fully improvised work. It is the framework in which the performers invent character, gesture, movement, dialogue in response to the environment and to each other. The performances will feature collaborations with students in 3D Design, Video and Computer Animation, who will work to create environments for performers. The performances will also feature collaborations with UNM dance students.
Ecotone Physical Theatre is an Albuquerque-based performance ensemble of dancers, actors and musicians who mine the rich veins of improvisation: sonic, kinesthetic, textual, visual. Each performance is unique, a blend of slapstick dramedy, angular sound and gesture, rife with potential for hap and mishap. Ecotone Physical Theatre makes extensive use of computers, video and digital technology, random props and costumery, and a variety of dance techniques. The company was formed in the spring of 2006 when Jewell and Company Dance Theatre joined forces with the experimental music group Incus to collaborate on a series of improvised performances called Ecotone. The collaboration was so fruitful and well received, they decided to merge, taking the name of the performance as the name of the company. Its members are directors Donna Jewell and Kevin Paul with Lisa Nevada, Jessica Searer, Bill Clark, Mary Margaret Moore, Susan Skeele, Rufus Cohen, along with costume designer Stacia Smith.

:: February 20, 2009: The SPECTRE SERIES welcomes NoiseFold
NoiseFold is a leading interactive sound-art and live cinema group founded by David Stout and Cory Metcalf. NoiseFold perform live animation works to breed virtual forms that both create and respond to sound. These abstract visual structures can take many forms including bio-mimetic cellular life & organic architectures. The performers animate, coax, bend and herd these audio-visual "organisms" by use of cameras, microphones, electro-magnetic and infrared sensors. The result is a visual music theater where "lifelike" avatars emerge, evolve and emit a startling array of sounds; from pure noise and chaotic rhythms to shimmering melodic textures.

:: February 13, 2009: Peter Sarkisian
Peter Sarkisian is a remarkable and internationally recognized video artist working with video as a sculptural element that challenges the moving image as a narrative model. Using two-dimensional projections intertwined with three-dimensional surfaces, Sarkisian is attempting to free his imagery from the confines of the frame, thereby creating a sense of immediacy, which overcomes referential barriers and enables the viewer to participate perceptually in a constructed event.
Sarkisian studied film and photography at the California Institute of the Arts and then directing at the American Film Institute. He has exhibited his video work extensively including the 2002 Whitney Biennial, The Iris Collection in Mexico City, Art Forum, Berlin, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I-20 Gallery in New York, and is represented by James Kelly Contemporary in Santa Fe.
