New Mexico Research in the Arts, Sciences, and Technology
New Mexico is an ideal context for the Leonardo 40th Anniversary Conference; the state embodies the primary research areas which Leonardo and its community of members address: the arts, the sciences, and technology.

New Mexico is nationally recognized as a leader in the arts. In addition to having in residence a dynamic and diverse artist community, Santa Fe ranks as the third largest art market in the U.S. A renowned scientific and engineering community lives and works in New Mexico: at the Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, as well as cutting-edge scientist researchers at the Santa Fe Institute.

State-led initiatives, such as the Media Industries Strategies Project [MISP] created by Governor Richardson, prioritize the development of technology-based companies and creative industries/enterprises. Such initiatives include cultivating a major film and media industry within New Mexico, and the creation of a dynamic Interdisciplinary Center, the Arts, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory [ARTS Lab] at the University of New Mexico. ARTS Lab fuses research and education across the fine arts, computer sciences, engineering, medicine, with those of law and business.

Setting its sights on the new frontier, the State of New Mexico also supports research and development on space technologies. The X-Prize cup, held in Las Cruces, is an annual competition to promote breakthrough research in technologies for space. This year 20 teams competed for over $2.5 million dollars in cash prizes in three different areas: the Lunar Lander Challenge, the Vertical Rocket Challenge, and the Space Elevator Games. Moreover, New Mexico in partnership with Virgin Galactic Airlines is currently building Spaceport America, the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport.
