Finding a Pose

New Video Installation by Min Kim Park

‘Finding A Pose,’ addresses the female nude as a contemporary esthetic yet critical iteration of an idiom with a long historical trajectory in "Western" art. This exploration evaluates advertising and the societal ambivalence towards the naked female body in current U.S. culture.

Min captured video on unrehearsed movements of individual female volunteers. These are ordinary, young, white college coeds who have been given no detailed direction except a simple instruction of "finding a perfect pose which best describes them." Min captures not only the final pose but also their repeated attempts to locating it. The stage in which the participant poses has no props but only a white background with a clinical appearance. In their attempt to find the pose, the participant grapples, internally, with what is acceptable and unacceptable, what is beautiful and ugly, what is comfortable and uncomfortable, with what others would think, and so on.

Min Kim Park has steadily exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Her video piece titled, ‘Perfect Asian Woman,’ has been included in the DVD magazine, ‘ArtDisk,’ which screened at the Miami MOCA at Goldman Warehouse during the Artificial Light exhibition 2006. She will also be presenting a collaborative multimedia and interactive installation, ‘Threshold’ as a part of ‘Art and Artifice of Science’ exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe in February 2007.
