AFTERNOON WORKING SESSION FOCUS AREAS:
BUILDING NEW MEXICO BASED PRODUCTION
Facilitators: Webb Johnson, Eric Renz-Whitmore
Continued growth of New Mexico's media industries depends on a balance of visiting productions and an active local community that produces its own work. Local production builds infrastructure and an ongoing job base; when the property is created in state, profits, jobs and related infrastructure are retained here in New Mexico.
What do we need to do to foster more locally developed and produced media production (film, animation, documentaries, games, etc.)? How can we support the full cycle of a production, from pre-production through post and distribution?
What areas should we focus on developing? This working session will identify priorities and suggest strategies to make them work.
- Post-Production Opportunities
- Encouraging Local Production
- Sound Composition, Design and Production Opportunities
- Game & Animation Development
EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Facilitators: Mikaela Renz-Whitmore, Amelia Rouse
Working with Len Malry (NMHED)
Every company looking to move or grow in New Mexico is concerned about having a pool of qualified potential employees to draw from -- and we want to prepare enough of New Mexico's youth to take these highly skilled high wage jobs. Additionally, literacy in today's rich media environment requires not only the ability to read and write, but a broader set of communication skills and knowledge about presenting information through video and other media. Addressing these needs is an ongoing effort; this session picks up from the "New Media, New Needs" session at Governor Richardson's NM Higher Education Summit.
What kind of education and training will New Mexicans need? What kinds of pathways do we need to build from K-12 to two and four year institutions — and beyond— to insure media business will have the employees it needs for continued growth?
This working session will continue the dialog and address the following topics:
- Higher Education Programs
- Gap Analysis
- Opportunities for Collaboration
- Working with K-12: Programs for Film, Animation, Games and STEM
- Relationships with Higher Education
- Building Relationships with Business and Professional Organizations
- Networking and Information Sharing for Educators

NEW MEXICO MEDIA NEXT
Facilitators: Luciano Oviedo, Tom Greenbaum (Intel Corporation)
The world of media is experiencing more rapid change than ever before, with new formats and technologies transforming not only entertainment but the infrastructure that underlies business and every aspect of our lives.
While we rely on more established models for much of our planning, what are the disruptive trends and technologies that present us with new opportunities? Which opportunities seem most suited to New Mexico? As we continue to grow, how do we involve the arts and culture of New Mexico? Where are the gaps we can (and can't) fill and recommended areas for targeted investment?
- This working session will identify trends and recommend a portfolio of strategies for addressing them.
- What are the most Interesting/Disruptive trends we see today?
- Which areas do we (or will we) have the critical mass of available programs and assets necessary to make something happen?
- What other NM Industries/Priorities could be linked?
- What are the Infrastructure & Education Needs to move forward?
