The Internet of Things (IoT) Temporary Tech Public Art Round II project is a continuation of a unique artists opportunity offered under the City’s In-Sight Temporary Public Art program in collaboration with other city, community and educational partners, that aims to engage local artists with innovative technology training opportunities to collectively explore themes and ideas for future artistic enhancements and public art in Albuquerque and along the Rail Trail. All activities will take place from October 7, 2024 to June 30, 2025. Check out Public Art’s podcast Take Another Look episode all about the Internet of Things Temporary Tech Public Art Projects in phase I and II.

Six artists will be selected to participate in a special artist focused technology course offered through the CNM Ingenuity’s Internet of Things and Rapid Prototyping Bootcamp. The Bootcamp will provide education and training to build devices and experiences with smart connect computing suitable for temporary public art applications. The goal is to train six artists who seek to include a digital/technology component to their traditional public art practice and commission six experimental, temporary works of art that will be examples of how technology and art can be combined along the Rail Trail.

The six selected artists will be provided tuition for the 10-week immersive CNM Internet of Things (IoT) course led by CNM course instructor Brian Rashap. The six selected artists will also receive an $8,000 stipend to be able to attend the full-time 10-week course (Monday – Thursdays 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. = 380 hours October 7, 2024 – December 13, 2024) and to realize their temporary public art installations in public spaces, including a proposed additional small prototype tech and art exhibition at the forthcoming City Hall Gallery. CNM, through a contract with the City of Albuquerque Department of Innovation and Technology will customize their Internet of Things course specifically for public artists wishing to adopt technology as part of their creative toolbox.

The temporary public art installations will serve as experimental, demonstration public art for evaluating future permanent public art opportunities in Albuquerque.
