Throughout history, artists across diverse cultures have drawn inspiration from the moon, crafting enduring works that reflect its enigmatic beauty. From ancient cave paintings to Renaissance masterpieces, the moon has served as a symbol of mystery, romance, and wonder, influencing artistic expression through the ages. Today, contemporary artists continue to explore its luminous presence, infusing their creations with the timeless allure of Earth’s celestial companion.  

The Fall 2024 Lunar Arts Award aims to support emerging artists in exploring the rich artistic potential of the moon as a source of inspiration. By fostering creativity and experimentation, this award seeks to showcase diverse interpretations of lunar themes and foster dialogue within the University of New Mexico artistic and scientific communities. 

 

Details:   

  • Three winning proposals will be selected to receive funding. 
  • Each selected project will be awarded a $750 artist stipend. 
  • An additional $250 in material support will be provided for necessary supplies needed to realize the proposed artworks. 

 

Eligibility: 

  • This award opportunity is exclusively open to current University of New Mexico students enrolled in the Fall 2024 semester. This includes both graduate and undergraduate students.  
  • All artistic mediums and disciplines are welcome, including but not limited to: 
    • Painting 
    • Sculpture 
    • Photography 
    • Film/video 
    • Poetry 
    • Dance 
    • Music 
    • Digital art 
    • Mixed media

 

How to Apply: 

  • Complete the submission form, which includes: 
  • Project Title 
  • Written description of your project (1250 character max). 
  • A brief artist statement highlighting your background, artistic influences, and why you are interested in this opportunity (1250 character max). 
  • A link to an online portfolio. This is not required, but encouraged. Link can include website, Google Drive, Instagram, Vimeo, Soundcloud, etc. 

 

 Selection Process: 

  • Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of judges consisting of faculty members from Space Sustainability Research Grand Challenge (SSRGC) and ARTSLab Faculty Advisory Committee. 
  • Projects will be evaluated based on artistic merit, originality, feasibility, and their capacity to spark audience discourse about the moon. 
  • Special consideration will be given to projects that seek to bridge traditional science communication and creative expression.
