On November 14, 2024, ARTSLab hosted a mesmerizing evening with internationally renowned artist August Muth as part of the Gale Memorial Lecture Series. Attendees gathered to hear Muth discuss his groundbreaking work with holography, a medium he has mastered over the past three decades. Muth captivated the audience with stories of his artistic journey, from his early experiments with light and physics in New York City to pioneering large-scale holography in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Alongside the talk, attendees had the rare opportunity to view a selection of Muth’s luminous holograms, displayed in the ARTSLab gallery space.
The evening highlighted Muth’s innovative techniques, which redefine the perception of light and space, creating works that exist at the intersection of art and science. Attendees were inspired by his reflections on the philosophical implications of holography and the poetic interplay of light and time in his creations. The event was co-sponsored by the Gale Memorial Lecture Series, ARTSLab, and UNM’s Research & Discovery Week, and served as a testament to the importance of fostering dialogue at the intersection of disciplines.
The Gale Memorial Lecture Series was established in memory of Dr. David his wife Sylvia whose generosity made the series possible. To learn more about August Muth and his work, visit August Muth’s website.
